How Long Does It Take to Design and Install a Custom Moss Wall?

If you're considering a custom moss wall for an upcoming project, one of your first questions is probably: How long will it take?

There isn't one timeline that applies to every project.

A custom preserved moss wall moves through several stages, including design, approvals, fabrication, shipping, and installation. The complexity of the design and the amount of coordination involved can significantly affect the overall schedule.

In the video above, Green Wallscapes founder Lindsay Scherr Burgess explains what clients and design teams can expect when planning a custom moss wall.

What affects a custom moss wall timeline?

Two moss walls of the same size can have very different timelines.

Some of the biggest factors include:

  • Size and complexity of the installation

  • Number of design revisions

  • Custom colors and material selections

  • Logos, lettering, or signage

  • Architectural or millwork coordination

  • Project location

  • Shipping requirements

  • Installation conditions and scheduling

That's why we recommend discussing your project with our team as early as possible.

Step 1: Design and approvals

Before fabrication begins, we need to determine what we're creating.

Some projects move through the design phase quickly. The client may already have a clear vision, or the first proposed concept may be exactly what they're looking for.

Other projects require a more collaborative design process.

We may work with the client, interior designer, architect, sign company, or other project partners to refine colors, patterns, materials, logo placement, dimensions, and other details.

That process is important. Once the design is approved, it becomes the roadmap for fabrication.

Step 2: Custom fabrication

After approval, the project moves into fabrication.

Our artists create custom preserved moss walls by hand, placing moss and botanical materials according to the approved design. More detailed installations, intricate patterns, dimensional botanical elements, or particularly large walls can naturally require additional fabrication time.

For large commercial projects, we may also need to fabricate the installation in multiple sections so it can be shipped and assembled efficiently on site.

Step 3: Shipping and installation

The final stage is getting the finished moss wall into the space.

Depending on the project, Green Wallscapes can coordinate installation or fabricate the wall so it can be shipped and installed by another qualified team.

Project location, site access, construction schedules, and coordination with other trades can all influence this stage of the timeline.

When should you start planning a moss wall?

Earlier is better.

If you know you want to incorporate a preserved moss wall, moss logo, or custom biophilic feature into a project, you don't need to wait until every design decision has been finalized before contacting us.

Starting early gives everyone more time to work through design decisions, budget, fabrication requirements, and installation logistics without unnecessarily compressing the schedule later.

It can be especially helpful for commercial projects where the moss wall needs to coordinate with signage, lighting, millwork, electrical elements, or an overall construction timeline.
