How We Design a Custom Moss Wall From Start to Finish
What does “custom moss wall” actually mean?
At Green Wallscapes, it means starting with the space and the client's vision rather than asking them to choose from a handful of predetermined designs.
As Lindsay Scherr Burgess explains in the video above, we want to understand what the client is trying to create, how the wall fits into the larger interior, and what will make the finished feature feel unique to that particular project.
Step 1: Understanding the vision
Every custom moss wall starts with a conversation.
We talk with the client or design team about the wall, the surrounding space, the desired aesthetic, colors, branding, budget, timeline, and any ideas they already have.
Some clients come to us with a highly developed design. Others have an inspiration image, logo, color palette, architectural rendering, or simply an idea they want our team to help develop.
Both are great starting points.
Step 2: Selecting the right materials
Preserved moss walls can be created using far more than one type of green moss.
Depending on the design, our artists can work with different varieties and colors of preserved moss, preserved plants, botanical elements, branches, dimensional details, and other materials.
Those choices allow us to create everything from clean, understated installations to highly textured botanical features.
Because preserved moss does not require watering, soil, or sunlight, we also have significant creative freedom in how the materials are arranged.
Step 3: Making the design specific to the space
A custom moss wall should feel like it belongs in the environment around it.
For a corporate office, that might mean integrating a company logo or brand colors. In a hospitality or retail environment, the goal might be to create an unexpected focal point that visitors remember.
We can also design around architectural elements such as millwork, lighting, signage, TVs, corners, and unusual wall dimensions.
The wall itself becomes part of the design process.
Going beyond the traditional moss wall
Some of our favorite projects begin when a client asks us to create something we haven't done before.
One example Lindsay discusses in the video is a custom project for Stella Artois. Rather than approaching the project as a standard moss wall, our team had the opportunity to develop something specifically for the brand and its vision.
