Creating a Timeless Oasis: A Guide to Specifying a Preserved Living Wall
In the realm of modern interior design, preserved living walls (a.k.a. moss walls) have emerged as a sustainable and visually striking way to bring nature indoors. These lush vertical gardens not only add a touch of elegance to any space, but also contribute to overall well-being and productivity in the workplace. In this guide, we'll walk you through the step-by-step process of specifying a moss wall in your next project.
Step 1: Research and Planning
Before embarking on your preserved living wall project, it's crucial to conduct thorough research about the company that you will be specifying.
1) Does the company I want to work with have good reviews? Are they able to answer my questions in a timely manner?
2) Have they done the scale of project I am looking for?
Not all moss wall companies are created equal! We do all sizes from 5-500 sq. ft. We have a professional studio where we do this work. We have a process so you get what you are looking for. You get exceptional customer service to make sure the wall is maintained the way you want it to be. We can provide the documentation you need for specification as well as fireproofing.
3) Do they work with the materials I want to use in this project?
Familiarize yourself with the different types of preserved plants available, as well as the specific requirements for their maintenance. Check out our collections to see the various options that we offer. Consider factors such as lighting conditions, humidity levels, and the overall aesthetic you wish to achieve. We're typically open to some really weird applications and are not afraid to push the envelope when it comes to custom moss artwork.
To specify a green wallscape, here is the information we need:
1) The Collection (see above in our header menu)- the best thing to do is determine which collection you like, including the types of plants you want to use - we are happy to quote various options. We have a myriad of price points. If you want to ask us specific questions, schedule a project call.
The success of your preserved living wall hinges on choosing the right plants. Opt for preserved moss, ferns, and other greenery that not only complement your design vision but are also well-suited to the indoor environment. Make sure the preserved plants you choose are of high quality and have been properly treated to maintain their color and texture over time.
2) The edging - what kind of edging you would like (whether we will be providing a sheet moss edge, or if it goes wall to wall or a metal or wood edge is needed).
3) Any additional features such as a logo (and whether or not you would like the logo embedded in the moss or floating on studs). If you want a custom logo color to match your brand, please leave the pantone in the design notes.
This upfront planning will save you time and effort in the long run and get your client the look and feel they desire!
Step 2: Design
We work with you either before or after the client has selected the finish to come up with the design. We have a very specific design process we go through to make sure you get exactly what you are looking for.
Step 3: Fabrication
Once you or your client has decided on the final design (which you can provide the design to us or we can provide the design to you), we take a deposit and begin the fabrication process. Our typical lead times are 3-8 weeks (depending on the time of year) and for very large projects it can be as long as 12 weeks.
Step 4: Installation
We install mostly in Florida, however, we have installed larger projects when it makes sense (like a very large wall or hyper custom application which requires a lot of attention to detail). Most of our work is installed by local handymen, woodworkers, or art installers. If they know how to use a drill, typically that is sufficient!
Step 5: Maintenance and Care
Preserved living walls require minimal maintenance compared to traditional indoor plants. However, periodic dusting and cleaning may be necessary to keep your wall looking fresh and vibrant. Refer to the care instructions provided by the us to ensure the longevity of your preserved living wall. Please DO NOT mist the wall or put it into direct light.
Looking forward to working with you on your next mossome project!
